Boulder and gravel hardscaping creating a non-combustible zone around a Spokane home

Wildfire Defense
for Inland Northwest Homes

Defensible space, fire-wise landscaping and exterior sprinkler systems, designed for the way fire actually moves through Spokane-area properties.

Straight Talk First

No one can make a house fireproof

Any company that tells you otherwise is selling you something. What you can do is stack the odds, and the research on this is fairly clear: most homes lost in a wildfire are not overrun by a wall of flame. They are ignited by wind-blown embers landing on a roof, in a gutter, in bark mulch against a foundation, or in dry brush near a deck.

That is good news, because embers are something you can plan for. The work that makes the biggest difference is unglamorous: clearing the first five feet around the structure, breaking up continuous fuel, and choosing what you plant and where. It is landscaping work, and it is what we have been doing in this region for over 20 years.

How We Approach It

Layers, not silver bullets

  1. 1

    The First Five Feet

The highest-value zone on the whole property. Non-combustible ground cover, nothing that carries flame to the siding.

  2. 2

    Defensible Space

Breaking up continuous fuel out to 30 feet and beyond, so fire on the ground loses its path to the house.

  3. 3

    Hardscape as Fire Break

Patios, gravel beds, boulder walls and paths that do double duty: they look good and they do not burn.

  4. 4

    Exterior Sprinklers

An added layer for properties that warrant it, on top of the work above, never instead of it.

Why It Matters Who Does It

Built for the Inland Northwest, not a catalog

Wildfire products get sold the same way everywhere, but a system that works in a mild coastal climate can fail here. Our winters split undrained pipe. Our summers pull municipal water pressure down exactly when everyone needs it. Slope, wind direction off the Palouse, and the ponderosa and bunchgrass around most of these properties all change what the right answer is.

  • Local for 20+ years, on these soils and these slopes
  • Systems designed to be drained and winterized
  • We already build the hardscape that doubles as fire break
  • Honest assessment, including when you do not need us
