How To Care For Your New Landscaping
After investing in your new landscape, it makes sense to take good care of it so you can enjoy it to the fullest. Below are some tips to help ensure the success of your new landscape.
Watering
A slow deep watering is preferred to a light sprinkling, for deep watering encourages deep rooting. A garden hose is commonly used to water plants individually. However, if pressed for time, it may be quicker to set up a sprinkler or a soaker hose. Continue watering through the fall to ensure your plants' winter survival. I usually recommend watering 2-3 times a week. If in doubt, push the mulch back from the base of the plant and feel the soil. If it is dry, then it needs to be watered. If it is wet, do not water. If there is adequate rainfall you may skip a watering, but during extremely dry weather increase your watering frequency.
Fertilizing
New plants may be fertilized during their first season, follow the manufactures instructions or we will provide specific instructions on landscapes we install.
Pruning
Proper pruning will ensure that your landscape remains both aesthetically pleasing and within its boundaries. It is impossible to sum up pruning in one paragraph, so we recommend our customers contact us for more information.
Mulching
A mulched landscape will not only look better, but will encourage healthier plants. Benefits of mulch are that it helps to (1) retain moisture in the soil, (2) prevent weeds from sprouting, (3) insulate your plant's roots from harsh winter temperatures. Mulch should be re-applied as necessary. Never mulch deeper than three inches and re-apply every spring or at least every other spring to maintain its effectiveness.
